To be in the black. = To turn a profit in business. / To be in the red. = To loose money in business.
Due to the economic slow down many companies were in the red but recently, due to an economic upswing many firms are now in the black.
To curb. = To restrain, to hold back.
I'm trying to curb my weight, so I have to cut down on the amount of sweets that I eat.
To bite the bullet. = To accept a loss, hardship, or pain.
As one of our clients declared bankruptcy, we had to bite the bullet for a considerable amount of money.
Farsighted. = Foreseeing what is likely to happen and preparing for it.
She was farsighted enough to know that overeating would ruin her health, so she began to diet.
A bolt from out of the blue. = Something that happens very suddenly without warning
We were all very shocked as the president announced his retirement like a bolt from out of the blue.
